Amanda Pulls Away
Amanda Whitaker stretched her lead in both the Formula Atlantic and outright Formula 2 Championship this weekend at The Nurburgring, Germany. In qualifying, she dominated her class by putting in a laptime a whopping 2 seconds faster than her nearest class opponent and well amongst the higher powered Formula 2 cars.
In the weekends first race on Saturday she made a great getaway and on her opening lap passed 3 cars. Although it was a relatively quiet race, Amanda chased hard in the B34 Chevron to finish 20 seconds clear of nearest class rival Sandy Watson and just behind the Lotus 69 Formula 2 car of the very experienced Swiss driver Peter Studer to win her class and finish an excellent 7th overall.
In the second race on Sunday, Amanda once again made a fantastic start, this time passing 4 cars on the first lap! She had a terrific race long battle for 6th place overall amongst a gaggle of Formula 2 cars, but after a rock thrown up by her team mate Walter Mathai smashed one of her rear view mirrors, she played it safe on the last lap to take 11th overall and the more important class victory by 30 seconds from German Hermann Unold.
It was great fun although they were getting a bit wild at times! After my rear view mirror was smashed towards the end of the race, I had to stay on the side of caution as I couldnt see my opponents from the rear in certain corners. However, Im really happy to finish with the class win again. Saturdays was won outright by Frenchman Philip Harper who enjoyed a lonely drive to victory in his Ralt RT1. Sundays race produced one of the best spectacles of the weekend after Swiss driver Christian Fischer in a Chevron B35 held off a race long challenge by the much quicker Harper with some fantastic defensive driving. Christians result helps to take points away from Harper and pull Amanda further ahead in the overall championship.
Amanda has now won her class 6 times out of 8 races this season and finished 2nd twice against an all male grid. She next races in 5 weeks time at Belgiums fabulous Spa-Francorchamps circuit one of the best motor racing circuits in the world, although a place where she has yet to visit in her racing career.
