Amanda's Le Mans Story Amanda's Le Mans Story Amanda Whitaker had a weekend of highs and lows in the latest rounds of the Historic European Formula 2 series this weekend. She was racing in France at the Le Mans Story event which celebrates the history of the circuit and the famous cars that have competed there over the years.
Amanda made a last minute swap to race a Palliser Formula Atlantic car after the Chevron B34 car that she normally races developed a problem prior to last week's Oulton Park Gold Cup event. Even though it was her first time in the car and at the circuit, Amanda was immediately at home in the bright yellow machine, quickly setting a pace in practice that was quicker than many of the higher powered 2.0 litre Formula 2 cars. She qualified on class Pole Position and an impressive 6th overall and in the first race on Saturday she raced to class victory and 5th overall, right on the tail of Swiss driver Walter Nef in his March Formula 2. "I couldn't quite get past Walter on the straights but I was right with him around the corners" she said after the race "I was glued to his gearbox on the last corner of the last lap!".
The second race on Sunday started in a promising fashion with Amanda once again making a great start to run in 5th place and in the class lead. However, the enjoyment was short lived as she suddenly lost transmission power and retired from the race. Despite the disappointment she leaves Le Mans with 2nd
place in class and the overall championship behind the ever consistent
German Herman Unold and heads for the fantastic Spa-Francorchamps circuit
in 3 weeks time with the championship still to play for.
